Review: CD “Polyritmia”
Jazzpodium June 2011
… Christoph Haberer is a true master tinkerer among contemporary percussionists. For his percussion experiments, he makes full use of all electronic options to create sound and rhythm. … “Polyritma” is the title of Christoph Haberer’s new CD: he uses acoustic and electronic percussion, synthesizers, drum kits and specially prepared instruments such as the “piano skeleton” for his precise and highly complex but throughout laid-back play. The individual pieces are primarily based on a continuous beat which, owing to its complexity, pulsates in a polysemous manner. Using floating synthesizer sounds, steel drum or marimbaphone impressions, cymbal sounds, tins and the piano, he expands the rhythm and sound spectrum of percussionist soloists. The result is truly remarkable in its virtuosity and creativity and yet in some places it seems academic and constructed with associations to “new music”. His drumming precision is most intriguing, e.g. in “sieben und fünf” (seven and five). “Polyritma” is entertaining, but it is probably most enjoyed by specialists.
